The Race of the Rings
The Race of the Rings
Every year, the small Istrian town of Barban hosts one of the most interesting and authentic events in Croatia – the Trka na prstenac (The Race to the Ring). This traditional equestrian competition dates back to 1696, and today attracts visitors from all over Europe who want to experience a unique blend of history, culture, and sporting excitement. The first records of The Race to the Ring date back to 1696, when it was organized by the Venetian Loredan family (who owned Barban at the time) in order to attract as many visitors as possible during the fair events.
The Race of the Ring has a rich history that spans centuries. The first written mention of this race dates back to the 17th century when Barban was under the rule of the Venetian Republic. This traditional race was, and remains, a symbol of chivalry, courage and skill of horsemen competing in precision and speed. Competitors, dressed in historical costumes, try to hit the centre of an iron ring hanging on a rope above the course with a spear.
The race is usually held on the third weekend in August, and the main part of the event is a racing competition in which horsemen gallop trying to hit the ring. In addition to the race, visitors can enjoy a rich cultural and artistic program that includes folklore performances, concerts, exhibitions and gastronomic delicacies of Istria. The festival lasts for several days and offers a variety of activities for all ages, making it an ideal family outing.
A visit to The Race of the Ring provides a unique opportunity to get acquainted with Istrian culture and tradition. This is a chance to see horsemen in action, feel the spirit of the past and enjoy the atmosphere that brings history to life. Also, taste Istrian specialties such as prosciutto, truffles and top-quality wines that are part of the gastronomic offer.
The Race of the Ring in Barban is not just a sporting event, but an opportunity to delve deep into the historical and cultural richness of Istria. Visit Barban and become part of a tradition that has been alive for centuries, where the past and the present meet at one of the most beautiful festivals in Croatia.
By decision of the Ministry of Culture, The Race of the Ring in Barban was included on April 4, 2016, on the list of intangible cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia.
