November 23rd 2018 – 11th Meeting ‘Let’s sing and play in old customs’

On Friday November 23rd, starting at 6 PM in the Sports Hall of the Elementary school Jure Filipovića in Barban, KUD Barban organizes the traditional meeting ‘Let’s sing and play in old customs’. The meeting gathers singers and musicians from all over Istria, and the singers from the Italian national minority ZT Armando Capolicchio from Galižana also performed. Numerous performances in previous meetings have also been made by guests from the neighbouring Primorje-Gorski Kotar County: members of the ‘Udruga sopaca otoka Krka’ and KUD Žejane.

The encounter was originally conceived as a memorial gathering of singers of istrian songs in memory of Romano Broskvar, who was a great singer and one of the founders of KUD Barban. However, after several years there has been a discovery that the number of older singers has been rapidly reduced due to illness and death, and three years ago KUD Barban has created a new manifestation – ‘Let’s sing and play in old customs’. The intention was to give honor to all of those who with their work and action obligated future generations of singers to preserve the indigenous songs and plays of the Istrian region.

The meeting ‘Let’s sing and play in old customs’ brings together an increasing number of young singers and musicians from year to year. They continue to cultivate Istrian folk music and thus promote the cultural and traditional heritage of Istria, which justifies the organization of meetings of this type.
