Barban, a small town of rich and important history, became famous for the horse manifestation „The Race of the Ring“. In order to discover the charm and beauty of the old horse-riding game, it is necessary to look for its historical start – the oldest preserved record of the Race from 1696 when the winner of the Race was Ottavio Quellis. After 1703, the written record of the equestrian competitions in Barban is lost. In 1976 Barban renewed „The Race of the Ring“. Since that year, „The Race of the Ring“ is held every year, in the third weekend in August. The race, besides the way of preserving tradition and culture, has become a real attraction that unites the horsemanship and the sport spirit.

Competitors – Barban’s knights – must in three races and less than 12 seconds overcome the 150 m long track and hit the ring with a spear. The ring consists of two concentric circles, connected in a way that four fields are formed between them. The hit in the middle (the middle of the ring) carries three points, the hit in the field above the middle carries two, under the middle one, and in the side fields by half a point. The racer who wins the highest number of points in 3 races becomes the winner of the Race.
